Twelve Years On: Calvin Habib’s Turffontein Double

Back Where It Started

Calvin Habib rode his first-ever winner at Turffontein back in 2014, as a workrider still finding his feet before the SA Jockey Academy took him in. More than a decade on, with over 330 career winners and four Grade 1 victories to his name, he’s still finding winners at the same track — and on Thursday’s card he found two.

A Juvenile Announces Himself

The first came with Magic Declaration, a two-year-old having only his second start for trainer Alec Laird. A third-placed run last time out at the same track gave little away, but stepping out again over 1450m he showed markedly more, careering clear late for the kind of debut-season breakthrough that gets a stable talking.

A Mare Rediscovers Her Form

The second was Mrs Stormiatrix, a filly for A P Peter who had banked two wins earlier in the year before a quiet run in her last start. Back over 1000m at Turffontein, she found her form at just the right time, getting back to the winner’s enclosure under Habib in the FM handicap.

The Bigger Picture

Neither winner will make headlines outside the racing pages, but they’re the kind of days that add up to a career — and Habib’s is a substantial one. All four of his Grade 1 wins have come for champion trainer Sean Tarry, including victories in the Allan Robertson Championship and the Summer Cup, and he carried a Zimbabwe jockeys’ championship home along the way. A Thursday double at the track where it all began is a fitting line in that story.
