A Sunday Afternoon That Belonged To One Rider
Nine races went to post at Greyville, and by the time the last horse had crossed the line, one silk kept turning up in the winner’s enclosure. Keagan de Melo booted home three winners on the card and added two more seconds for good measure — the kind of afternoon that reminds you why trainers keep booking him for the big days.
The treble started early. Molten Rock, freshened up after a solid run at the Vaal, got the job done in the opening juvenile event. Two races later de Melo was back in the frame aboard Green Commander, a maiden who’d been knocking on the door with a string of place efforts before finally getting it right at 1600m. The third came deep in the card, when Position of Power justified plenty of confidence in the gallop.co.za Class 3, striking for a jockey who already knew the horse’s petrol from a placed run last time out.
De Melo wasn’t finished there. He was back in the placings twice more before the card wrapped up, second on Summer Winter and second again on Sovereign Gem — five rides in the frame from the day’s nine races.
A Career Built From The Ground Up
De Melo is a graduate of the South African Jockey Academy, and his first winner came all the way back in 2010 aboard Western Gem at Scottsville. Since then he’s built one of the more decorated CVs in the local weighing room — well over a thousand career winners, a South African Derby aboard Son Of Raj, and a Summer Cup on Puerto Manzano among the highlights. His 2022/23 season was the one that finally delivered a national jockeys’ championship, a campaign built on 277 winners nationwide.
These days de Melo splits his time between Hong Kong’s competitive circuit and the big days back home, but Sunday’s treble at Greyville was a reminder that when he’s back on South African soil, the winners still come easily.
