The Family Business: Justin Snaith’s Fillies Take On Greyville

A Cape Stable’s Reach Extends to Greyville

Tucked into the card at Greyville on 10 June were two fillies wearing the colours of one of South Africa’s most decorated stables — trainer Justin Snaith’s Cape-based operation, sending runners the length of the country in pursuit of their next winner.

Snaith’s name carries serious weight in South African racing. A six-time national champion trainer, he has saddled more than 60 Group 1 winners and claimed Horse of the Year honours with stars like Do It Again, Oh Susanna and the brilliant Eight On Eighteen — and he heads into the year chasing a historic fourth consecutive Cape Town Met victory.

Two Fillies, Two Different Stories

In the BET WITH TOTE Maiden Plate over 1600m, Gimme the Power lined up for the stable looking to finally get her nose in front. The three-year-old has been the model of consistency without quite breaking through — a string of solid placings, including a close-up second at Greyville last time out, suggests it’s only a matter of time.

A few races later, in the Lucky Fish Mystic Fortune for fillies and mares, stablemate La Landonne carried the same silks. She arrived off the back of a smart win at Greyville barely a month earlier, adding to a record that already includes three career victories — fresh, in form, and back at the scene of her last success.

The Family Behind the Silks

The Snaith operation is a genuine family business. Justin grew up around horses in Muizenberg, watching his father Chris train on the sands of False Bay, and today runs the stable alongside his brother Jonathan — Justin holding the trainer’s licence, Jonathan steering the wider operation. It’s that blend of old-school horsemanship and modern professionalism that’s made Snaith Racing a fixture near the top of the South African — and increasingly international — trainer rankings.

For two Cape-bred fillies, a trip up to KwaZulu-Natal for a Greyville meeting is just another stop in a season that, for this stable, never really has a quiet week.
